The idea was matching them determines the amount of damage each character does based on the element. The light and dark one's I'm not sure what they would do in this case. Maybe some kind of passive effect like higher crit chance or something.
The stored stored could then be used to use special moves, debuffs, or heal.

How did you make references visible beyond canvas in Krita?

Krita has a reference tool that allows you to put images pretty much anywhere. It's the one with the pin icon on the tool bar, you can also copy an image from your browser and press ctrl+shift+R which will paste the image as a reference in krita
